PhD opportunities
Please contact me at wouter.schellart-at-sci.monash.edu.au in case you are interested in starting a PhD project in subduction zone dynamics, backarc basin evolution, subduction zone orogeny, or plate reconstructions.
Currently the following project is available:
PhD project in geodynamics and kinematics of subduction zones
The PhD candidate will work on a project dealing with subduction zone processes and overriding plate deformation. The aim of the project is to gain insight into the 3D evolution of subduction zones and to understand the driving forces of backarc extension and subduction orogeny. The PhD student will be involved in geodynamic modelling, plate kinematic calculations and plate reconstructions. The modelling component will involve scaled laboratory modelling (analogue modelling) at the newly developed Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Monash University and could be extended with numerical modelling using the code Underworld developed here at Monash. The student will be supervised by Wouter P. Schellart and Louis Moresi, both at Monash University.
The project is fully funded by a Discovery Project research grant from the Australian Research Council and a research grant from Monash University. Scholarships for living allowance and tuition fees are guaranteed for competitive candidates.
Candidates can start at any time in 2009, as long as they meet the required qualifications.
