Compactus

The School of Geosciences Compactus holds extensive and varied collections of minerals, rocks, fossils, maps and theses. These collections are used for both teaching, researching and provide specimens and exhibits to assist practical classes at all levels of undergraduate study.

The School holds a large collection of Australian geological and topographical maps, aerial photographs and teaching videos.

In addition, the School of Geosciences hosts the BHP World Map Collection, on permanent loan from BHP Exploration, now BHP Billiton. To query the content of the BHP collections, please email Megan Hough.

Rock Collection
Since its inception by Professor Bruce Hobbs in 1973, the research collection has grown to over 50,000 samples. Material has been collected from all over Australia, and other parts of the world such as Antarctica, Heard Island, the Philippines and Indonesia. Diligent research and teaching by the School's academic staff, and the completion of nearly 400 post graduate research projects, have contributed the bulk of the material.

The collection has also grown in depth and value due to the generosity of several benefactors. The collection was enhanced in 1979 with the addition of the Ruth Coulsell Bequest and in 1991 with the donation of over 2000 specimens by Mr. and Mrs. E.G.Cripps. Many of these items are on display in the foyer and teaching laboratories of the Geosciences building. The School also hosts the Ward Mineral Collection, on permanent loan from BHP Exploration (now BHP Billiton). For further information on all rock collections, contact Mr Chris Pierson.
