Research in Geosciences
The School of Geosciences at Monash University offers research programs across a wide range of Earth Science disciplines. We are consistently rated as one of the most successful Geoscience Departments in Australia, and have a large and vibrant research community of academic staff, postdoctoral research fellows, postgraduate students and honours students. We have active collaborations with other universities within Australia and overseas, research institutions such as CSIRO, state and federal government agencies, and the mining, hydrocarbon and environmental geosciences industries.
The School of Geosciences is an active member of the national Predictive Minerals Discovery Co-Operative Research Centre, and is host to a node of the national AuScope NCRIS crustal imaging and modeling network.
Researchers at Monash have access to an enviable range of analytical and technical equipment for geochemical analyses of rocks, minerals and waters, stable and radiogenic isotopes, geophysical measurements, fieldwork, and sample collection and preparation. Opportunities to be a part of this exciting research environment exist at the Honours (Hons), Master of Science (MSc), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and the postdoctoral level.
Research in the School of Geosciences is concentrated into a number of fields, including:
• Geodynamics, Tectonics and Structural Geology
• Three Dimensional Modeling, Numerical Modeling and Simulation
• Physical Volcanology, Geochemistry and Igneous Petrology
• Basin Studies, Sedimentology and Energy Resources
• Hydrogeology and Environmental Geoscience
• Applied Palaeontology and Paleobiology
• Ore Deposit Geology and Geochemistry
• Geophysics: Structural Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Environmental Geophysics, Geothermal Geophysics
Interested prospective research students and postdoctoral research fellows should browse the web pages of academic and research staff to find more information about specific research disciplines and interests, and should contact those staff directly to make further enquiries.
