ACRC: Volcanic, Magmatic and Geochemical Processes

The volcanology-sedimentology research group at Monash University has focussed on dynamic processes in modern and ancient volcanic and volcano-sedimentary systems. In modern volcanic settings, research has included: The origin, flow dynamics and depositional processes of large-volume silicic pyroclastic flow-ignimbrite systems in the Andes; Large volume basaltic pyroclastic flow-ignimbrite systems in Italy; Small to intermediate pyroclastic fall and flow systems of phonolitic composition on the oceanic island volcano of Tenerife. There has also been a long term interest in the behaviour of pyroclastic flows when they enter the sea, and this problem has been tackled in both young systems such as the 160ka Kos Plateau Tuff in Greece, and the older Palaeozoic, Proterozoic and Archaean successions in Australia and North Wales, Britain.
